Welcome to Pathways at Otorohanga College

Welcome to the Pathways Centre at Ōtorohanga College.

Whaea Claire and Linda Campbell understand that figuring out what you want to do or be is exciting and can also be really challenging, but we are here and ready to help you navigate the choices for YOUR future.

Gateway

Gateway allows us to provide learning opportunities for senior students (Year 12 and 13) in a structured workplace environment, usually including at least 20 Industry Training Organisation (ITO) NCEA credits attached. Through Gateway, students are able to begin forming a pathway from school to employment, blending study with hands-on workplace experience to gain insight into a career in an industry of interest.

Workplace placements are organised to suit the student, the employer and the students’ commitments at school and are made in consultation with whānau, employers and Deans. Gateway placements usually occur on one day per week, however sometimes a student may be on a placement for up to 5 days a week over a certain period of time.

Previous Gateway participants have enjoyed placements in Hospitality (chef, barista, baking, kitchen-hand); Trades (plumbing, building, engineering, mechanics, electrical, drainage, hairdressing, beauty therapy); Early Childhood Education; Farming (dairy and dry stock); Tourism (guiding, retail, ticketing, hospitality); Law; Health (medicine, nursing, midwifery, radiology); Accounting; Textiles (pattern making, retail) and Retail.

STAR

Secondary Tertiary Alignment Resource, or STAR, allows us to offer a range of learning experiences to students that may support their transition from school to further study and employment. Many tertiary providers offer short, introductory courses (often called a “taster” course) in a wide range of careers. These courses can be available for students from Year 10 to 13 and provide a day or so of hands-on, practical experience in a chosen study/career field.

Pathways Centre Support

But wait; that’s not all! We also provide a range of information and support in relation to career guidance and pathway planning. This includes (but is not limited to):

  • Help with writing a CV

  • Job application support and interview preparation

  • Career pathway guidance

  • Information on courses, providers and scholarships

  • Assistance with tertiary enrolment applications

  • Driver licencing

...plus much, much more! Here in the Pathways Centre, we acknowledge that no two situations are identical and we embrace individuality. Let us help you draw the map to your future.
