Arts and Culture

Music

The music department is very well resourced, with state of the art equipment and technology so that our students can be well prepared to enter the music industry. Opportunities are offered in solo and group performance, theory, songwriting and composition. Students may also get involved through the use of Music Technology, learning how to DJ, record, mix and produce music. A range of musical options are available for all students including learning drums, bass guitar, guitar, keyboard/piano, vocals, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, flute and clarinet. Students can learn these within their chosen music course or as an extra outside of the classroom. Music groups are established by student demand and may include singing groups, barbershop, choirs, rock groups and instrumental ensembles.

Art

Art offers a unique opportunity to not only learn about ourselves, but to develop visual literacy and aesthetic awareness. Students do this through exploring experiences, stories, concepts, social issues and needs. Students will think about their own ideas, feelings, values and beliefs and bring this into their art works.

Studying Art can bring new perspectives on how other people and cultures have shaped our world through their creativity and imagination.  Students will experiment with materials such as paint, pastels, charcoal and clay. Students can choose Painting, Printmaking, Sculpture or Photography as subjects up to NCEA Level 3.
The Art course and associated assignments are carefully selected and planned to include local and international artists, and themes that are relevant and meaningful to a New Zealand and global context.

Our facilities at Ōtorohanga College include a computer lab using photoshop, a visual arts room, cameras, and printing presses.

Pasifika Group

We are Pasifika OC and we are a newly formed group, coming together in the early terms of 2023. Our group is dedicated to exploring the beautiful cultures of the Pacific through cultural understandings and dance. Our group hails from all over the Pacific Islands and since our establishment we have been very fortunate to explore and perform our cultural dances at O Factor and the 2023 Otorohanga College Senior and Junior Prizegivings. Moving into 2024 we are very excited to continue on the journey, learning and growing within the Pacific community.
